<description>Reading an East German Photo Archive, 1967–1990

Halle 14 - Zentrum für Zeitgenössische Kunst, Baumwollspinnerei, Leipzig
06.05. – 01.07.2012

Double Bound Economies begins with a photo archive from the German Democratic Republic (GDR) by photographer Reinhard Mende. Produced as commissioned works, the photographs dramatize the situation of productions in Volkseigene Betriebe and the Internationale Leipziger Messe from 1967 to 1990. From the archive, Double Bound Economies moves toward contemporary artistic and spatial positions, historical and theoretical analyses, and the production of a video project. Artists, theorists, scholars, and former participants were invited to view, comment on, or select from the archive. This collective work method resulted in a polyphonic dramatization of the archive while also reporting on a nonlinear approach to the GDR.
Following the presentation in Leipzig, Double Bound Economies will be exhibited at the Centre de la Photographie, Geneva (September–October 2012) and at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Zurich (January–February 2013).

<description>Reflections of contemporary art on the newspaper medium

Martin-Gropius-Bau, Berlin
23.03. - 24.06.2012

The newspaper has served as material and subject matter for art since the mid-19th Century. Artists deal with this medium in many ways, whether in its function as an instrument of information or of manipulation. The motivations and meanings behind the use of the medium are always different. ARTandPRESS shows around 55 artistic positions on this issue, from Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg and Joseph Beuys to Sigmar Polke, Gerhard Richter and Anselm Kiefer to Ai Weiwei, Julian Schnabel, William Kentridge, Richard Prince and Rirkrit Tiravanija.

		<description>Schinkel Pavillon
27.01 – 11.03.2012

The Schinkel Pavillon’s exhibition "Hallelujah" features the artist Isa Genzken and her latest work of cabinet of sculptures, miniatures and collages. Influenced by Theodor Adorno’s philosophy, Isa Genzken in her recent show refers to Berlin’s landscape and its often-associated aesthetic and architectural mediocrity, and its contrast to New York's fascinating skyline. The artist Genzken shares a special and work-related relationship with the Big Apple's cityscape. This is the reason why one of the main works in "Hallelujah" resembles the construction of the "New Museum" building, which places cargo transportation boxes on top of each other. Flowers, grass and peacock feathers add to the intended monumental and sculptural happening of the artist.

<description>In February 2012, the listed building of the "Ehemalige Jüdische Mädchenschule" - a former Jewish girls' school in Auguststrasse in Berlin opened as a space for art and cuisine. Following historically suitable restoration, the building was made available to the public after years of vacancy. The former classrooms and corridors present changing exhibitions by different actors from the art world. Camera Work Contemporary opened a Gallery on the first floor. Michael Fuchs Galerie exhibits works in the former assembly hall on the third floor. He shares the floor with EIGEN + ART Lab, an exhibition format for international artists.

In the former gymnasium, the restaurant Pauly-Saal offers guests regional and seasonal German cuisine during the day and in the evenings - adjoined is the Pauly-Bar. In the private dining rooms, The Kosher Classroom serves three times per week certified kosher cuisine, including a traditional Sabbath dinner. Mogg &#38; Melzer Delicatessen sells homemade pastrami and other meat specialties, as well as products from the Pauly-Saal and The Kosher Classroom – to eat in or to take away.

<description>Berlins Auguststraße has a new place to eat and drink - the team behind the Grill Royal opened their new restaurant Pauly-Saal in the Jüdische Mädchenschule. The ingredients-based cuisine will be prepared to the highest standards by starred chef Siegfried Danler. It's about all things braised, sautéed, salted or marinated. Sausages will be made, vegetables pickled, breads baked in wood-fired ovens, pastries prepared onsite. In addition to stews served in cast iron pots, suckling pig from the rotisserie and traditional offal dishes will be on the menu. The former gymnasium of the school was remodeled and furnished according to the owners' designs. Thus, all materials have been manufactured especially for this project, whether the ceramic tiles from Berlin, the extraordinary Murano chandeliers, or the chairs covered with dark green fabric.

<description>Industrial aesthetic for a new living

Berlin architects ROBERTNEUN redefine inner city living and create open space condominiums on empty urban planning sites at the southern point of Gleisdreieck. The scheme for Am Lokdepot reflects an unconventional, experimental approach to alternative and future-oriented living structures, implemented on behalf of the UTB property development company, LLC. The project will repurpose a defunct Berlin railroad area occupying some 28,000 sqm , while maintaining its industrial flair. Am Lokdepot (at the locomotive rail yard) is an urban planning endeavor for the development of inner city space that has recently become available, which will transform the disused railway ground at Gleisdreieck into a public living space.

		<description>alexanderlevy
28.01. - 24.03.2012

With Punishment I gallery alexanderlevy shows new works by the artist Julius von Bismarck. The title of the exhibition points to a pre-Christian legend that says that the Achaemenid King and Egyptian Pharaoh Xerxes had the strait at Hellespont punished with 300 lashes, after bridges that had been built on his order were destroyed by a storm shortly after construction. At impressive locations in Switzerland, South America and the United States Julius von Bismarck plays with the rhetorical power of this traditional retaliation, whipping nature, defying its power, until he is exhausted.
